Account takeover via missing password-change step-up
Published Oct 12, 2026 · Updated Oct 12, 2026
Nginx UI before 2.4.1 allows remote authenticated users to take over administrator accounts through user-management password changes. The POST /api/users/:id endpoint accepts another account's password change without RequireSecureSession, unlike the self-service path. An existing authenticated account is sufficient to replace the initial administrator's password, invalidate administrator tokens, and gain administrator access.
