Local command execution via filename macro expansion
Published Sep 1, 2026 · Updated Sep 2, 2026
Command injection in rpm on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 and Red Hat Hardened Images allows local users to execute commands via a crafted .gem filename. The rpmuncompress -x utility expands RPM macro syntax embedded in the untrusted filename while constructing the extraction command instead of treating the name as data. Execution requires a user or automated build workflow to process the file and runs with that invoking account's privileges.
