SMF crash via missing session-type validation
Published May 11, 2026 · Updated May 11, 2026
Denial of service in Open5GS SMF 2.7.0 through 2.7.7 allows remote authenticated users to crash the SMF with a crafted request. The vSMF modify route validates only that smContextRef exists, then a non-home-routed session selects an empty QoS-flow list, causing ASN.1 encoding to return a null buffer that reaches a fatal assertion. Reachability requires SBI access and a valid session reference; successful exploitation terminates the SMF process and interrupts session management.
