Authenticated mongod termination via exposed internal expression
Published Sep 8, 2026 · Updated Sep 8, 2026
Reachable assertion in affected MongoDB Server 7.0, 8.0, and 8.3 releases allows remote authenticated users to terminate mongod. An internal aggregation expression accepts ordinary authenticated queries and passes a malformed index specification into index-key generation, where an assertion fails. Read-only database privileges suffice; successful exploitation interrupts service for every connected client, but only certain build configurations terminate.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=7.0.0 <7.0.41
- Affected versionversion=8.0.0 <8.0.30
- Affected versionversion=8.3.0 <8.3.9

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
