File modification and disclosure via hard-link symlink resolution
Published Sep 14, 2026 · Updated Sep 14, 2026
Path traversal in CPython 3.13 and earlier allows attackers to alter external file metadata or expose file contents via a crafted tar archive. The tarfile data and tar extraction filters let a hard-link member resolve through an extracted symbolic link, causing attribute updates and linked content to escape the destination. An application must extract an attacker-controlled archive on a filesystem supporting the crafted link chain; impact is limited to permissions, timestamps, and file contents.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
