Authenticated private-message access via user ID spoofing
Published Jul 31, 2026 · Updated Jul 31, 2026
Authorization bypass in BuddyPress before 14.5.0 allows remote authenticated users to read, modify, or delete others' private messages. The Messages REST API authorizes a caller-supplied user_id instead of the logged-in user's identity, and its update and delete handlers reuse that check. Subscriber-level access and an active Messages component are sufficient; the impact is confined to message content, state, and recipient membership.
