Kernel memory leak via failed AFS volume acquisition
Published Sep 4, 2026 · Updated Sep 4, 2026
A memory leak in the AFS client in Linux 6.8 through 7.1.4 allows attackers to retain dying volume objects via unspecified vectors. afs_lookup_volume_rcu() continues after afs_try_get_volume() fails without releasing the dying volume object whose reference count reached zero. The public record does not identify an attacker-controlled trigger or establish that repeated failures cause a hang, crash, reboot, or shutdown.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
