Kernel use-after-free via USB wakeup race
Published Sep 4, 2026 · Updated Sep 4, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel USB core allows attackers to dereference freed device state during concurrent wakeup and disconnect handling. usb_wakeup_notification() reads device state from an xHCI interrupt without taking the lock used by hub_disconnect(), allowing the latter to free that state concurrently. Reachability requires xHCI wakeup-notification IRQ handling to overlap USB hub disconnection; the Linux CNA has not specified a consequence beyond the freed-memory dereference.
