Kernel hang via saturated xattr cache retry
Published Sep 4, 2026 · Updated Sep 4, 2026
Denial of service in Linux ext4 allows local users to hang filesystem operations through a corrupted filesystem image. ext4_xattr_block_set retries the same cache entry after finding its on-disk reference count saturated, without making that entry ineligible for the next lookup. Reachability requires a preexisting corrupted ext4 volume or elevated access to construct and mount one; the resulting spin can retain a directory lock and block concurrent removal operations.
