Kernel memory corruption via header-length race
Published Sep 3, 2026 · Updated Sep 3, 2026
Out-of-bounds write in Linux kernel dev_validate_header allows local users with CAP_SYS_RAWIO to corrupt kernel memory through a device race. The function zero-fills a short link-layer header to a current hard_header_len after packet headroom was reserved from an earlier, smaller value. Reachability requires CAP_SYS_RAWIO, concurrent device reconfiguration, and a variable-length L2 protocol with header validation; no remaining in-tree protocol has that combination.
