Kernel use-after-free via unlocked driver override
Published Aug 28, 2026 · Updated Aug 28, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel VMBus driver allows attackers to trigger a stale memory access during concurrent driver probing. The hv_vmbus_get_id path reads driver_override from vmbus_match without the device lock while the driver core can replace or free that string. The race is confined to Hyper-V guests using VMBus driver overrides, and the upstream disclosure identifies no resulting crash or privilege gain.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
