Kernel crash via unvalidated resident attribute list
Published Aug 28, 2026 · Updated Aug 28, 2026
Out-of-bounds reads in Linux 7.1 allow attackers to crash the kernel through a crafted NTFS resident attribute list. ntfs_read_locked_inode() copies a resident $ATTRIBUTE_LIST without validation, after which list walkers trust fixed-header fields and names; load_attribute_list() also dereferences a truncated trailing entry under only an end-pointer bound. When the kernel parses a malicious NTFS volume, either path reads beyond the attribute-list buffer and can produce a kernel oops, interrupting the host rather than exposing or modifying data.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
