Kernel BUG via unmatched preemption enable
Published Aug 28, 2026 · Updated Aug 28, 2026
Preemption-state corruption in Linux kernel powerpc perf event deletion allows attackers to trigger a scheduling-while-atomic kernel BUG. When fsl_emb_pmu_del sees a negative event index, it jumps past get_cpu_var but still calls put_cpu_var, issuing an unmatched preempt_enable and underflowing preempt_count. Reachability requires a PowerPC system with the affected perf path and CONFIG_PREEMPT enabled; public sources do not establish an attacker privilege level or reliable system crash.
