Arbitrary file creation via staged symlink following
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Improper link resolution in kitty 0.47.0 through 0.48.2 allows context-dependent attackers to create files outside drag staging. The subdir_data_for_drag() path builder opens a concatenated descendant path after ignoring an EEXIST result, so a same-name symlink and directory redirect add_payload() outside the staged tree. Reachability requires a client program to send the crafted drag item sequence; creation is limited to new files and directories at locations writable by the kitty user.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
