CVE-2026-79705Hinoki check available

Arbitrary file creation via tar symlink escape

Published Sep 15, 2026 · Updated Sep 15, 2026

Path traversal in buildah/copier allows local users to create files outside an extraction directory via crafted tar symlinks. The extraction path handling follows attacker-controlled symbolic links without keeping resulting writes beneath the caller-supplied destination. Exploitation requires a non-root application to invoke the package outside Buildah; Buildah's chroot hardening blocks this path.
