Root command execution via unescaped DNS reply logs
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
Stored XSS in Netgate pfBlockerNG before 3.2.16_1 allows remote attackers to execute commands as root through a crafted DNS reply. The pfb_unbound.py convert_other() path preserves metacharacters and writes raw DNS RDATA to dns_reply.log, while pfblockerng_alerts.php renders the value without HTML escaping. Exploitation requires Unbound Python mode with DNS reply logging, a client query through the resolver, and an administrator to view the Reports Stats page.
