Service interruption via unbounded regex backtracking
Published Sep 23, 2026 · Updated Sep 23, 2026
Regular expression denial of service in JLine 3.0.0 through 3.30.14 and 4.0.0 through 4.3.0 allows attackers to hang less sessions. Less.getPattern() compiles user-controlled search and display-filter text as Java backtracking regular expressions, then repeatedly applies them to file lines without a timeout or backtracking bound. Reachability requires use of the built-in less viewer; one local session can hang, while exposed Telnet or SSH deployments can lose a bounded worker pool across repeated sessions.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
