Service interruption via POINT_PATTERN backtracking
Published Oct 1, 2026 · Updated Oct 1, 2026
Regular-expression DoS in geopy before 2.5.0 allows attackers to stall application processing with long malformed coordinate strings. The POINT_PATTERN expression used by Point.from_string() repeatedly backtracks across leading text and overlapping whitespace matches when parsing fails. Exploitation requires an application to pass attacker-controlled strings without a length limit; repeated requests can interrupt that application, while numeric Point construction is unaffected.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
