Administrator account takeover via unchecked Multisite identity binding
Published Sep 1, 2026 · Updated Sep 1, 2026
Authentication bypass in wp.insider Simple Membership 4.8.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to take over child-site Administrator accounts. During public registration, the plugin binds a new membership record to an existing global WordPress user when the submitted username and email match, without proving password knowledge or account ownership. A Multisite child site with public registration enabled exposes the path, and profile editing then resets the victim's global password, granting control of the existing Administrator account.
