CVE-2026-77113

Arbitrary file overwrite via crash-report keys

Published Aug 20, 2026 · Updated Aug 20, 2026

Path traversal in apport-unpack in Canonical Apport before 2.36.0, 2.34.2, and 2.28.4 allows local users to overwrite files via crafted crash-report keys. ProblemReport.load accepted key names that bypassed setitem validation, and apport-unpack later joined those untrusted keys to the target directory path when extracting report fields. Exploitation requires a malicious .crash file to be unpacked by a user or script, and any created or overwritten files inherit the privileges of that executing user.
