CVE-2026-76889

Denial of service via UMTS FP heap overwrite

Published Aug 19, 2026 · Updated Aug 20, 2026

Heap-based buffer overflow in the UMTS FP dissector in Wireshark 4.6.0 through 4.6.7 and 4.4.0 through 4.4.17 allows attackers to crash Wireshark. The UMTS FP parser trusts a MAC-is descriptor count and then writes past a fixed-size heap array when malformed input supplies more descriptors than the array can hold. Reachability requires delivery of crafted UMTS FP traffic to a live capture or persuading a user to open a malicious packet capture file, and the published impact is application crash rather than code execution.
