Arbitrary command execution via unquoted depName
Published Aug 19, 2026 · Updated Aug 20, 2026
Command injection in Renovate 32.135.0 before 40.33.0 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary commands via hermit dependency names. In lib/modules/manager/hermit/artifacts.ts, the hermit manager appends the user-controlled depName into ./hermit install and ./hermit uninstall command strings without shlex quoting, so shell metacharacters in dependency names are executed instead of treated as data. Exploitation requires write access to a repository that Renovate scans and, as shown in the GitHub advisory proof of concept, can terminate or otherwise take control of the Renovate runner host or container.
