Firmware replacement via cleartext update download
Published May 2, 2026 · Updated May 2, 2026
Cleartext firmware retrieval in TRENDnet TEW-821DAP 1.12B01 allows man-in-the-middle attackers to replace update downloads. The /www/cgi/ssi update handler uses a hard-coded firmware URL over HTTP rather than HTTPS, exposing the URL and response to modification. The attack requires interception of update traffic; URL replacement can redirect the device or deliver modified firmware.
