Host file access via intermediate symlink prefix bypass
Published Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026
Path traversal in CRI-O allows local users to access host files outside a configured bind-mount prefix via a crafted CRI hostPath. During container creation, bind-mount source handling follows an intermediate absolute symlink without keeping the resolved source inside the configured prefix. The path requires a nonempty bind_mount_prefix and attacker influence over a hostPath or its symlink; an escaped mount can expose host files or aid host privilege escalation.
