Subscriber-to-Administrator escalation via mismatched HMAC identity
Published Aug 26, 2026 · Updated Aug 26, 2026
Missing authorization in Mang Board WP 2.3.7 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to forge administrator cookies. mbw_get_hash_key() derives an HMAC from the current user's identity rather than the cookie username, while mbw_validate_auth_cookie() accepts the mismatch. Subscriber-level access is sufficient to change an administrator password and take over the WordPress site.
