CVE-2026-74884Network attack vector

Arbitrary file access via plugin_id traversal

Published Aug 17, 2026 · Updated Aug 17, 2026

Path traversal in the plugin sandbox in jahlives openssl_encrypt before 1.4.0 allows attackers to access files via plugin_id input. The _is_safe_path method in openssl_encrypt/modules/plugin_system/plugin_sandbox.py builds ~/.openssl_encrypt/plugins/{plugin_id} from unsanitized plugin_id, while _validate_plugin only enforces type and length and does not reject separators or .. segments. Reachability depends on whether attackers can supply or execute a malicious plugin declaration; if so, the sandbox path check can be redirected to directories such as /etc, exposing unintended read and write access through plugin operations.
