Service crash via unchecked pad width

Published Aug 16, 2026 · Updated Aug 16, 2026

Resource exhaustion in Scriban before 7.0.0 allows remote attackers to crash applications via crafted template pad-width values. The string.pad_left and string.pad_right built-ins call StringFunctions.PadLeft and PadRight, which pass an untrusted width directly to .NET String.PadLeft and String.PadRight without an upper bound, so a single template expression can force a very large intermediate string allocation before TemplateContext.LimitToString is applied. Exposure requires an application to render untrusted Scriban templates; in that configuration, one request can raise OutOfMemoryException and interrupt the hosting process or service.
