Local privilege escalation via freed sibling traversal
Published Aug 22, 2026 · Updated Aug 25, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel eventfs component allows local users to escalate privileges through tracefs event teardown. eventfs_remove_rec() frees a child recursively, then advances the ordinary list iterator by reading list.next from that freed or repurposed child. Local tracefs write access is required; successful exploitation corrupts kernel memory and grants elevated privileges or triggers a kernel panic.
