CVE-2026-74483

Memory exhaustion via failed binfmt_misc mounts

Published Aug 15, 2026 · Updated Aug 15, 2026

Resource leakage in Linux kernel binfmt_misc 6.7 through 7.1.7 allows local users to exhaust memory through failed mounts. When bm_fill_super fails, teardown omits the namespace release because ownership moved to the superblock but the applicable put_super callback is not invoked. An unprivileged caller with user-namespace mount access and a tight memory cgroup can force the failure repeatedly, leaking one user namespace per attempt.
