CVE-2026-74482

Kernel memory corruption via huge-page split race

Published Aug 15, 2026 · Updated Aug 15, 2026

Use-after-free in affected Linux kernel branches starting at 4.8 allows local users to crash the kernel through a huge-page split race. __folio_split() unlocks after-split folios before releasing i_mmap_rwsem, so a concurrent final iput() can free the inode before the lock path dereferences its mapping. Triggering requires local low-privilege access, a file-backed shmem huge page with a poisoned tail beyond EOF, and attacker-controlled truncation and close operations.
