Arbitrary file read via unchecked rule path
Published Apr 29, 2026 · Updated Apr 29, 2026
Path traversal in Gel Data gel-mcp 0.1.0 allows remote attackers to read local files through the fetch_rule MCP tool. fetch_rule joins the caller-controlled rule_name directly beneath RULES_DIR, checks only that the resulting path exists, and returns read_text() without validating containment. Exploitation requires access to the MCP tool and exposes only files readable by the gel-mcp service account; no file-write capability is reported.
