Process crash via stale filter bitmap
Published Apr 30, 2026 · Updated Apr 30, 2026
Heap-based buffer overflow in Wireshark sharkd 4.4.0 through 4.4.14 and 4.6.0 through 4.6.4 allows attackers to crash sharkd. The frames method reuses a cached filter bitmap sized for a previously loaded capture, then reads past it after loading a capture with more frames. Exploitation requires control of a sharkd session that loads differently sized captures and reuses the same filter; the demonstrated consequence is a process crash.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
