CVE-2026-73622Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Secret exfiltration via URL environment expansion

Published Aug 13, 2026 · Updated Aug 13, 2026

Information disclosure in GitPython before 3.1.55 allows remote attackers to exfiltrate process environment secrets through crafted URLs. Remote.create() and Submodule.add() pass attacker-influenced URLs to Git.polish_url(), whose default os.path.expandvars() call substitutes environment values before storing the URLs in .git/config or .gitmodules. An embedding application must accept an attacker-controlled remote or submodule URL; a later fetch, pull, or remote update transmits the expanded secret to the attacker-controlled host.
