Unauthenticated crash via TLS record length underflow
Published Oct 14, 2026 · Updated Oct 14, 2026
An out-of-bounds read in Cesanta Mongoose before 7.23 allows remote attackers to crash built-in TLS via malformed TLS 1.3 records. In src/tls_builtin.c, mg_tls_recv_record() accepts a tag-only record and underflows recv_len to SIZE_MAX, causing subsequent handshake processing to read beyond the heap buffer. The MG_TLS_BUILTIN backend must be selected; exploitation precedes certificate or Finished validation, and demonstrated impact is a crash rather than direct data disclosure.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
