Authenticated resource access via refresh-token type confusion

Published Aug 11, 2026 · Updated Aug 11, 2026

Improper authentication in Audiobookshelf before 2.36.0 allows remote authenticated users to access API resources with a refresh token. The jwtAuthCheck function in server/auth/TokenManager.js accepts a signed JWT whose type is refresh as a bearer token on API and WebSocket resource endpoints instead of limiting it to /auth/refresh. Possession of an associated user's refresh token is required and grants that user's resource access, including profile data, without broader unauthenticated access.
