Arbitrary command execution via Netrw menu injection
Published Aug 11, 2026 · Updated Aug 11, 2026
Command injection in Vim before 9.2.0840 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands through crafted Netrw directory paths. The GUI menu builders interpolate those paths into executed :menu commands without escaping the | separator or single quotes, so appended Ex and shell commands run. Exploitation requires menus-enabled GUI Vim and a victim to browse or bookmark an attacker-controlled path; commands run with the Vim user's privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
