Command execution via tags value in vimgrep
Published Aug 18, 2026 · Updated Aug 18, 2026
Command injection in Vim before 9.2.0845 allows attackers to execute Ex and operating-system commands via a crafted tags file. StructMembers() in runtime/autoload/ccomplete.vim builds and executes a :vimgrep command from typeref: or typename: data and escapes only / and , so an unclosed [ can break pattern parsing and a following | is parsed as a new Ex command. Exploitation requires a user to invoke C omni-completion with CTRL-X CTRL-O on member access resolved through the malicious tags entry, and the payload runs with that user's Vim and operating-system permissions.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
