CVE-2026-72978Network attack vector

Service interruption via unthrottled resource allocation

Published Sep 8, 2026 · Updated Sep 9, 2026

Resource exhaustion in AD FS on affected Windows releases allows remote attackers to interrupt federation service over a network. Microsoft identifies unbounded or unthrottled resource allocation as the fault but has not disclosed the request path or resource consumed. Exploitation requires no authentication or user interaction, has high complexity, and is limited to service interruption without reported data exposure or modification.
