System crash via unbounded NTFS log replay
Published Aug 15, 2026 · Updated Aug 15, 2026
Out-of-bounds write in the Linux kernel NTFS3 driver allows local users to crash a system by mounting a crafted NTFS image. The log_replay analysis pass validates only the first target cluster, then indexes past dp->page_lcns when lcns_follow spans beyond the allocated array. Exploitation requires local ability to mount a malicious NTFS filesystem; the demonstrated consequence is a kernel crash.
