CVE-2026-72162Public exploit

Kernel panic via unvalidated OCFS2 extent index

Published Aug 15, 2026 · Updated Aug 15, 2026

Out-of-bounds access in Linux OCFS2 before 6.18.40 or 7.1.5 allows local users to trigger a kernel panic with a crafted image. ocfs2_sum_rightmost_rec subtracts one from the unvalidated on-disk l_next_free_rec value and dereferences l_recs at the resulting negative or excessive index. A local user must mount a crafted OCFS2 image and extend-write the corrupted file; UBSAN-enabled kernels panic, while other builds can corrupt filesystem metadata.
