CVE-2026-71477

Local privilege escalation via preserved archive ownership

Published Aug 18, 2026 · Updated Aug 18, 2026

Privilege escalation in jdx mise before 2026.7.1 allows local users to replace a root-installed executable via preserved archive ownership. The packaging/standalone/install.envsubst installer extracts release tarballs without tar --no-same-owner and then moves mise/bin/mise into place, so the archive's uid and gid 1001 are preserved instead of being normalized before installation. Exploitation requires local access as a user controlling uid 1001 or gid 1001 and is more exposed when MISE_INSTALL_PATH installs into a shared path such as /usr/local/bin.
