Account takeover via mutable identity fields

Published Sep 3, 2026 · Updated Sep 3, 2026

Improper access control in SUSE Rancher before 2.15.1 allows remote authenticated users with users:update to hijack accounts. The Norman user store Update handler in pkg/auth/api/user/user_store.go accepts changes to username, principalIds, and displayName on existing User resources instead of enforcing immutability. Exploitation requires users.management.cattle.io update permission, a configured external identity provider, and a later login by the injected principal, which inherits the victim account's role bindings.
