Backend root escape via leading parent paths
Published Aug 5, 2026 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Path traversal in rclone serve restic 1.40.0 through 1.74.4 allows remote authenticated users to access objects outside the published backend root. The WithRemote middleware accepts leading ../ components because path.Clean preserves them, then forwards the unsafe path to backend GET, HEAD, POST, and DELETE handlers. Exploitation requires a reachable REST endpoint, a published backend subdirectory, and backend credentials that reach parent or sibling objects; affected backends permit reading, creating, overwriting, or deleting those objects.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
