Unauthenticated command execution via empty API key
Published Apr 27, 2026 · Updated Apr 27, 2026
Improper authentication in Hermes Agent 0.8.0 allows remote attackers to execute host commands through an exposed API server. The _check_auth function in gateway/platforms/api_server.py treats an empty API_SERVER_KEY as successful authentication, so protected prompt endpoints accept requests without a bearer token. Remote reachability requires enabling the API server and changing its default loopback bind to a non-loopback address; accepted prompts can invoke the agent's terminal tool with host privileges.
