Local privilege escalation via compressed-folder path traversal
Published Sep 8, 2026 · Updated Sep 9, 2026
Path traversal in Windows Compressed Folder allows local users with low privileges to elevate privileges by processing crafted archive paths. Microsoft identifies improper pathname restriction during compressed-folder handling but has not published the affected code locus or exact file operation. Exploitation requires local authenticated access; success crosses the intended directory boundary and yields elevated privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
