Code execution via heap-based buffer overflow
Published Aug 11, 2026 · Updated Aug 25, 2026
Heap-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Office Excel before August 2026 fixes allows attackers to execute code via a crafted workbook. Microsoft has not disclosed the failing parser, file format field, or copy routine that writes past a heap buffer during workbook processing. Reachability requires local delivery and user interaction, such as opening the file in an affected Office or Office Online Server build, and the cited records do not identify public exploitation.
