CVE-2026-68768

Process crash via unchecked outfile assembly

Published Aug 22, 2026 · Updated Aug 22, 2026

Heap-based buffer overflow in hashcat 7.1.2 and earlier allows local users to crash the process via a crafted hash file. The outfile_write() function in src/outfile.c appends an attacker-sized username, separator, hash, and plaintext into a fixed HCBUFSIZ_LARGE heap buffer with unchecked memcpy calls. Triggering the overwrite requires a local user to run --username --show on the crafted file; the demonstrated consequence is memory corruption and a process crash.
