Service interruption via unreleased btrfs root reference
Published Aug 10, 2026 · Updated Aug 10, 2026
Resource leakage in the Linux kernel btrfs filesystem allows local users to interrupt service during balance or relocation operations. In fs/btrfs/relocation.c, merge_reloc_roots() obtains a root reference but takes its exit path for an unexpected reloc_root without calling btrfs_put_root(). Local access is required, and repeated encounters can exhaust resources and destabilize the system.
