Kernel crash via invalid PTP state transition
Published Aug 10, 2026 · Updated Aug 10, 2026
Reachable assertion in the Linux ice driver 6.9 allows local users to crash the kernel by resetting a PF before driver unload. ice_ptp_rebuild() converts ICE_PTP_UNINIT to ICE_PTP_ERROR after a PF reset, causing ice_ptp_release() to process an invalid list state. The observed path requires a passed-through secondary PF whose PTP initialization lacks ctrl_pf; unloading the driver then triggers the kernel BUG.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
