Session hijacking via raw portal template rendering
Published Aug 3, 2026 · Updated Aug 3, 2026
Stored XSS in the patient portal template system in OpenEMR 8.2.0 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to hijack sessions. Template save mode blocks only literal PHP open tags, and template retrieval returns stored HTML and JavaScript without output encoding. Forms Administration privileges are required to plant the payload; a victim session is exposed when an administrator, clinician, or portal patient views it because the session cookie lacks HttpOnly.
